MG TD TF 1500 - Jerry Austin Half Shafts
I have just acquired the axle half shaft business from Dee Austin, (Jerry's widow) and am in possession of all of her remaining inventory as of yesterday. My wife and I drove over to LA and had a very nice visit with Dee, she is a lovely lady. For those that don't know this is a modern axle, designed by an axle engineer, manufactured using a modern high strength steel alloy and is heat treated. It is believed nearly 1000 have been sold in the last ten years with no known breakage. I was overwhelmed at the parts that Jerry had collected over the years. Also interesting was his collection of original sound recordings from shows and such. Well it is LA and yes he had other interests :-) I have set the price at $115 each, exactly half of what Moss charges for the old style axle. I give a 10% discount to my 4.3 conversion customers. I'm very happy to be able to carry on with this product. I expect to have them on eBay within the next few days. Dave

Dave, I have a pair I bought from Jerry in 2005 (one of the first purchases I made when I started the restoration). I was very impressed with the axle as compared to my original axles. Will you be able to go into production as well, or are you selling the remaining inventory? warmly, dave

What do you guys know about the potential for axle weakness during the T series production run? Did they use exactly the same axles for the TC, TD and TF? Did MG not improve on the metal quality at some point over those 10 years? I guess I'm asking if my '54 TF is less likely to suffer a break than a '48 TC. Also, in the absence of a fractured axle, how difficult is it to change them out? A Saturday afternoon project, or a week long project? Thanks. Tom '54 TF

DB- I will be purchasing in lots from the manufacturer TP (and all) Dee told me it was cardiovascular/heart failure. He was 78 years old. Wish I'd have known him. Tom, I don't know about the TC axle rate of failure, it is a different part number. The TD and TF are the same part number and probably other than driving habits a 1500 engine has a bit more failures than a 1250. You've just swapped your rear end so there should be no problems along the way. I'd suspect an afternoon would do it. And to clarify another question that has been asked, I do sell outside of eBay, just contact me directly to the email above. Dave
