MG TD TF 1500 - Intake manifold vacuum leak - Tip
| Intake manifold vacuum leak - Tip If your intake manifold has a vacuum leak due to the flanges not being flat and true due to warping or other causes the following might serve as a solution. Apply a film of epoxy (JB Weld is a good choice) to the flanges and mount both the intake and exhaust manifolds on the engine without the gasket but with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper between the manifolds and the cylinder head. Do not cut out the openings. Tighten the nuts and let the epoxy cure overnight. In the morning, clean up the excess epoxy and lightly sand the surfaces. When clamping down the manifolds, be sure that there is clearance between the intake manifold and the valve cover. If necessary trim the manifold as necessary to ensure clearance. You can check for vacuum leaks by spraying a flammable solvent such as carburetor cleaner at all possible leak locations while the engine is running at idle speed. If the engine RPM changes you have a leak at that location. Frank Grimaldi |
