MG TD TF 1500 - Installing floorboards

I'm installing the floorbards on my TF after a restoration and can't remember if there is any felt strips or rubber strips between the floorboards and frame/wood. Any recommendations much appreciated.

Mine had felt strips along the driveshaft tunnel bit I can't speak for the rest of it as the PO had done some changes to it. Mike

There are little rubber mats which are cut to fit tight around the scuttle hoop (under the floor boards). Around 4mm thick from my poor memory.
There are also felt and cork strips mentioned in the Service Parts List (Body Bulkhead section).

This is the scuttle hoop pad Matthew is referring to. It appeared to be original when dismantling my car. Quite dry and will need replacing. PJ

Andy,

Others who have replaced their boards have cautioned against using felt as it gets wet and holds the moisture. Some have used rubber strips such as the kind that you would use for campertops on pickup trucks or thin closed cell weather stripping.

Andy, I may be wrong, but I believe the factory only used felt between metal surfaces. Except for where it's used for sealing purposes, I don't think that felt (or rubber) was ever used against (or between) wooden pieces. The only exception I can think of is the felt between the cowl and the fascia panel support. Bud

Bud, my floors had felt beneath them. I have no idea if it was original or not.

I used pieces of old printing blankets to shim some areas, otherwise, I applied a 1/8 inch bead of clear silicone and allowed it to set up for 24 hours as a bead and then installed my floors. I also applied the same tchnique to the inner side rails along the prop shaft tunnel.

My TF had felt. It wicked up water and rusted the trans tunnel. According to a neighbor who has several Morgans, they too used felt between some parts and that is where rust is a real problem. I recently installed rubber between the floorboards and frame. Not sure how it is going to sound (squeeky?) as I have yet to take it out, but using felt just didnt seem to make sense in light of the issues.

I have decided to order some "hard" rubber from McMaster Carr, for this purpose...I also thought that the felt was a bad idea, because of rust....It's amazing to me that the rust isn't worse, and the only thing that I can think of is that my car wasn't driven in weather very often.

I used some Weather-Resistant, Fire-Retardant, Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Foam Rubber, adhesive backed. It was ultra easy to use. I adhered it to the frame and just sat the floor boards on it. If I ever have to remove the floor boards it should be easy and non-destructive. After about a year including some driving in the rain and snow there have been no problems.

They have many other sizes to suit your desires.

Many thanks for your suggestions guys. My car did have felt between the trans tunnel and floor rails but the felt was so soaked in oil (engine/trans leaking) that it did not rust anything. Lucky for me. I think i'll stay with the self adhesive rubber suggestion.

Thanks again,

Andy, in reassembling 'the53' I'm using rubber roofing material where felt had been. Bud
