MG TD TF 1500 - Ignition switch

Hi all

My ignitionswitch seems to be getting old. When I switch on the lights, sometimes the contact for the coil breaks and the motor comes to a stop unless I play a little with the key.
Also the charging controllamp glows vagely when swithcing on the lights. Don't think it's a charging problem, as it doesn't get brighter when I switch on my fog lights. It seems more like a current leak in the contact.
I wonder if anyone has expierience repairing these? I remember Dave Braun mentioning somethhing when he did his car but I think his pictures were lost due to a disc crash?

it is a small project to disassemble. i did mine 2 years ago. give it a go. regards, tom

I also did a disassembly, cleanup and reassembly. A number of little parts but all mechanical and easy to clean. I can't say for sure mine is working but it seems to operate well. Attached is a picture of the ignition switch disassembled with all the parts layed out in order. (Also pictured is the horn button disassembled and layed out - I did them at the same time.) I have a number of pictures of the process if it would help. Remember, if I can do it, anyone can.

Thank you for the response.
As far as I remember from rebuilding the dasboard, the lightswitch is soldered to the middlepoint of the unit. If turning the chrome ring at the front and removing the solder at the middlepoint at the back of the switch should more or less make it come apart - is that correct?
Patrick, if you would mind post/mail the pictures I believe they might help me. Pictures are always nice - and it sounds like you and me are pretty much in the same league.
