MG TD TF 1500 - ID Plate
| I'm not sure what the original finish on TD ID plate should be. I have TA, TB and TC plates that are all nickelled, and I have a half dozen TD plates that have an old brass finish. But then every once in a while I see a TD nickelled plate over brass. What is right? Were there two styles, or just one style but the nickel wore off easily? Thanks. Tom |

| Tom, I'm pretty certain that the finish was nickle that wore off really easily. Good thing brass looks good! warmly, dave |

| ...Nickel and it wipes off with too strong a polish so ends up brass.... |

| Tom, All three of my ID Plates are in their original condition. The plates are brass and all the standard information is machine imprinted and black filled. The plates themselves appear to be solid brass with no trace of chrome plating. The screws are also brass and have a slotted head. The "TD/ 4" is machine imprinted and black filled while the "224" is hand stamped. My car was built in Nov. 1950, so it is possible that later cars may have chrome ID Plates. George |

The ID plate on TD1414 is not brass:

| Bud, The ID Plate material in your picture is quite different to mine. What do you think the plate material is? The general details are the same, but the plate material certainly is not the same. The colour suggests a chrome that needs cleaning or aluminum. George |

| Here is the ID plate for TD 0268 which is nickel over brass, unrestored car. Bud, I would respectfully suggest there is brass under your excellent nickel. Matthew.

| The tags are actually very easy to replate. The Eastwood nickle kit does a good job. Only issue is I am not sure how they did the black fill in. Anyone know the technique? |

| Speaking of ID plates, I'm still looking for the best quality repro plates for a Mark II I have. Tom |

| Mathew, build date of 29 Nov of 49. Neat. I love the clipper blue as that is my color( or at least as close as I could get). . |

| This particular car was purchased off of the initial TD display in NYC. It spent a lot of its life hidden away in a garage. The plate was never polished and I would guess that it's plated brass. Bud |

| One of our posters from Europe had some beautiful examples made a year or two ago....perhaps he is still posting? I would like another as well..... |

| Interesting thread on the TD ID plate. I wonder about my TF plate. It does not look like nickel plated brass. Looks like aluminum. Does anyone know how they came. Here is a photo of mine. Tom '54 TF

| Yes, aluminium for TF's. Attached a pic of my original. The patent plate below was still brass and you can see traces of the nickel plate remaining. Matthew.
