MG TD TF 1500 - Hood Hoist
My new one man hood hoist. Made from a bicycle hoisting pulley. I quickly learned to tie the jaws together to keep them from slipping out from under the hood.

Good idea!....I ended up using my engine hoist, with a nylon rope, under both hinges....Gotta have something if you're on your own.... Your method gets the whole thing out of the way...I like it. Edward

That's a great idea. I have two of those hoists sitting in a box somewhere, too!

Ed, I was using my engine hoist with ropes also but this is much more convenient. Make sure to tie the ends to each other or they will slip out from under the hood. I just put the hood back on for the first time with the pulleys. Was rather easy. Mort

The 2nd picture makes it look like you're using a garage door opener for the hoist.

| Mort, great idea, my wife would applaud it because she had to listen to me curse for a few hours to install the bonnet! But I'm wondering how many times you had to remove those 2 wood screws on the aft end of the chrome center strip to lift the whole thing up? Did you use those brass threaded wood inserts instead perhaps? And what have you done to protect the paint on the edges? Any closeup picture perhaps? And just in case, don't do what I did when I hung some lighting up there! I forgot it was there and pushed to door opener. The door came up and my setup forced the door off it's tracks and the springs unwound! Scared the crap out of me and cost $70 to have a guy come up and rewind them safely. Now I keep it unplugged! | Ed, I use #8 x 1-1/2' brass plated steel wood screws. I have about a dozen in case the heads get messy. I find it easier to leave the front connector as is and unscrew the rear. Since the front hangs lower than the rear it is easier to slip it in and continue. The hooks are flat metal and rubber coated so they won't scratch the paint. The door stops about a foot before reaching the back cable. The hood is back on the car but next time I take it off I will send you some pictures. BTW...I use wood dowels to hold the hood open so it is easy to grab both sides with the hooks then take away the dowels, take off the 2 wood screws and hoist. Mort |

I used my back for the removal and the wife for the replacement....neither a good idea.

Mort Ordered one from Amazon...They had them from $10 to $200....I bought the one for $20, and will put a better rope on it...Now to figure out where to hang it. Thanks for your idea. Edward

Ed, I reiterate: "Make sure to tie the ends to each other or they will slip out from under the hood." Mort
