MG TD TF 1500 - has anyone rewound a wiper motor field coil
hello, has anyone here rewound a wiper motor. i read it uses 32 GA magnet wire(.2mm diameter). i have one dead field coil. i will try to determine if it is in the outer most windings first, but they are so old i think i want to try to rewind them. regards, tom

Tom - Contact Lawrie Rhoads http://www.british-car-part-restoration.com/ or Lew Palmer lpalmer@roundaboutmanor.com for information on wiper motors. They are the experts on them. Cheers - Dave

thanks david, i called lawie. his wife says he does not rewind field coils. i think i want to try to do this myself to see if i can. his base price for a unit is now $105 plus shipping which is not unreasonable when you think of what shop rates are now. regards, tom

Hi tom I think it is pretty easy.I was all set to do it to mine, but after ohming all the components the only thing i found was one broken wire. the resistance of one of the armature coils was about 20 % lower than the other 2 but it runs fine with no overheating. All the varnish on the wires is old looking and at first I thought it had been over heated but it could just be old age! Give it a try and let us know how it goes! Chuck

I have the fixtures and specs to rewind field coils for wiper motors. Let me know what you need. cheers, Bob

hello bob, i have a spool of 32 gauge magnet wire and a wiper motor with an open winding. i plan on doing both coils. the armature looks to be in much better shape. i am open to anything you have to offer. thank you. regards, tom n82mk at aol dot com

My notes, dated 11-26-03, state that field coils had 642 turns # 28 wire, measured 7.6 ohms DCR on one meter and 8.0 on another. The armatures used #30 1/2 wire so I assume the field coils also used SWG gauge wire. I don't have written down the micrometer measurements so at this point it is hard to determine what the original size was. Remember that the wire is measured without the insulation so you have to allow for that. And there is one, two or three coats of insulation on the wire. So it is best to strip the wire before measuring it. A winding machine is not a trivial task to build, then when you have that built you have to fabricate a fixture to hold the field coil such that it can be rewound. I solved all those problems back in 2003 and wound quite a number of field coils for Lawrie Rhodes. As far as I know they all worked as they were supposed to. Cheers, Bob

my count was 650 turns on one coil and 704 on the second. the coil with fewer turns by my count was also the lighter of the two coils when weighed before unwinding. it is indeed 28 ga wire as it measured .0012" after insulation was removed. i will post whether i am successful or whether the coil winding service was successful..now to fix my leaky house roof so i can start winding my coils. regards, tom
