MG TD TF 1500 - Happiness is:
| A 4.3 differential from Dave Clark A 5 speed transmission from Steve Neal at Skyhook and last but very not least An Eaton blower from Tom Lange at MGT Repair Now a T car as it should be, runs like the proverbial scalded ape. Hoorah! Merry Christmas, Jim |
| James Neel TD28423 |
| to all of you. My happiness is not driving like a scalded ape, but cruise along on quiet country roads in 40-50 mph lokking and smelling the nature. I am not in a hurry. I have done 74 years, and my next goal is 75 and s.o. Merry christmas to you all from Thoralf. Norway. MGTD 4490. |

| Thoralf - your point is well made, and I appreciate your comment. But over here, where so many people travel on highways, and longer distances need to be covered, the stock TD is a weak provider. Mostly, it over-revs at highway speeds, and runs out of power. With the three changes mentioned by Jim, the TD is transformed into a car of reliable power, well-geared, and with flexibility. In no way does it compromise what makes T-series cars great, it just improves what is already there. As Jim wrote me recently, he can now drive easily up a hill in third where he would struggle in second before. The modifications are not for everyone, and there are many, many cars for which the modification would be unnecessary, due to where and the way the car is to be driven. But just as the Miata is considered a modenr British car with all the bugs worked out, Jim's TD has all the benefits of a Miata made in 1952. You can read a bit about the supercharger kit at mgtrepair.net, and in TTT2 issue 7, at http://ttypes.org/ttt2 Another rticle on supercharging T-series cars will appear there in the next issue. | Thoralf, I have driven to the North Cape and cruised south to Bergen along the coast with a side trip to the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in a VW camper circa 1972. Therefore I know of what you speak. Here one can cruise what we call the Blue Highways but when one is on the major roads, one needs the where with all to keep up with traffic. My setup is perfect to accomplish both ideals. God Jul, Jim |

| Jim and Tom: I agree with everything you've said, and from experience I can tell you that all of the above mods have turned my TD into a car that will easily keep an all-day 75 mph pace on a four-lane highway. My specs are a bit different than Jim's - my blower is a Judson, my 5-speed a Ford T9, my rear axle is a 4.56 MGA, and I've ported, cammed, and overbored the block to +.040, but the result is the same - a car with almost-modern performance. If anyone else is considering the plunge into MG craziness - the results are well worth the effort. Anybody want to try and sculpt and cast a scalded ape as a radiator cap mascot? I'm in for one...

| Gerard - What sort of TD are you looking for, and at what sort of price? How much work are you prepared to do, to ultimately achieve what sort of car? Tom Lange Bar Harbor, Maine |
