MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel tank
Hi I am carrying out a restoration on my MG TF 1500 TF9823 xpeg 3618 I am in the process of replacing the bottom of the fuel tank as it has several pin holes having cut out the bottom and having access to the insides is there a treatment that I could use to seal the insides before I reweld the bottom. This is the first time I have requested any help on this forum although I read it regularly and it has been an invaluable help to me during my rebuild .If I have missed something in the archive my apologise. Regards Tony

Tony A good product for lining the fuel tank is POR15 Car Tank Repair Kit. Available in the UK from Holden Vintage & Classic based in Bromyard Herefordshire or Frost Automotive. I used this kit to line a new tank that I fitted to my TD 2 years ago. It's fairly simple to use but needs time between each stage for drying out. Don't know how it would work if you try it on the tank before welding but certainly works on the whole tank and will actually fill small holes. Best of luck mick 52 TD

I have used it too- It does seal the tank nicely. You need to do this after you have rewelded... For small holes I suplemented with some 'metal putty'. You can get it in autmotive stores. It is a two part roll of putty. Cut a piece off and mix the two coloured parts. You get the consistency of plastecine. Pop some over the hole and smooth over. Only good where you aren't going to see it as you will have small lumps :-) Apparently in an emergency chewing gum will do as it is petrol resistant... Dave

JB Weld works great to seal holes in the tank, can even be used when the tank has something in it.

I have often wondered how POR, or any other sealant for that matter, gets around the two baffles inside the tank. And why it doesn't clog the fuel line outlet as well. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué.

Tony, I used POR-15 with success and was happy with the result, took the tank to the paint shop and he dropped it causing a small crack in the interior coating. Call POR and asked if I could recoat their product. The response was you can't POR-15 over previously applied POR-15. Suggested their epoxy putty. I mixed some up and submereged it in a gasoline can for a couple of days to be sure the putty wouldn't disolve. Satisfied with the results, I wire wheeled the paint off the leak area down to the metal and applied putty following instructions. Repainted the area after curing...that was two years ago. Tanks holding gasoline just fine. Cheers, Daniel

Gord ,slosh POR treatment as directed and solution flows through the baffle holes as does gasoline. Coat the inside openings with "Neverseize" before starting procedure and plug with a cork, wooden or rubber stopper. If you don't coat the threads, after treatment you might have to 'chase' the threads. Good luck, daniel

Thanks for the responses I am going to clean the tank inside as I have access weld the bottom ion and then go down the route of por 15 Regards Tony

The POR product does not stand up that well to ethanol from what I've seen on may of the motorcycle sites I frequent. The Caswell seems to do well though.

After I POR'ed my tank I used a fiber optic to view the interior to check coverage, it was completely sealed to my satisfaction. Didn't do anything other than follow instructions. Best regards, daniel

A couple of years ago someone on this BBS referred me to this website: http://www.masterseriesct.com/page7.html I contacted the owner reference using the stuff in the gas tank and he identified that the specialized paint is imperviouse to ethanol as well as any gasoline product. I bought the paint for this and for the frame. Regards Rod

In researching options to seal the fuel tank on my TD I came across information that suggested the POR15 tank sealer was the same system as POR15 paint. I use POR15 paint and am always pleased with the results, but was reluctant to trust the system with continuous exposure to the gasoline formulations of today and the future. As a chemist by training, I felt more confident in a two-part epoxy-based system which I felt would undergo a chemical transformation to a more stable product. I used POR15 products to prep my tank and a Caswell product to seal it. I fill my tank to the brim in the off-season and now, several years later, the tank has had no problems. Here is what I did: http://www.ttalk.info/ShoerTank.htm Larry

Larry read the information regards sealing your TD tank and it seems to me the best way to go Thanks for the information .Might struggle with the agitation of the tank it does seem quite labour intensive good job my son is home from university looks like I have a job for him Best regards Tony
