MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Line Woes
| Pressurized my fuel lines to the carbys on my TF today using a new electronic SU pump. Firstly the braided flex line from the copper pipe to the rear carby banjo leaked thru the braided section, could have been interesting if the motor was hot. Although not a new hose visual inspection had revealed it to appear OK. After replacing the braided line with rubber tube I reapplied pressure. Next failure is the inter connecting hose at the swaged joint on the front carby banjo union. This braided line was brand new purchased in a carburretor kit from SU Carburetter Company (a division of Burlen Fuel Systems Limited in the UK). "Murphy must live here", there was a reward however, both failures occurred during the testing phase prior to engine start up and not out on the road. I replaced the carby inter connecting hose with copper pipe and the fittings salvaged from the Burlen hose, joints are silver soldered. Anyone see an issue with the possibility of fuel vaporising in the copper line? There have been numerous posts regarding oil line failures the same level of caution may need to be applied to fuel lines. Failures may result in complete vehicle loss. |

| G., IMHO, I think you mught be asking for trouble using a "hard" copper pipe between the carbies,,,, They need some flexability,, mostly for vibration and heat,,, I had soldered the overflow pipes together where they met under the carbs, and the line from the front carb broke at the banjo fitting because there wasn't enough free length to deal with the vibration,,,, Mabey a section of rubber hose in the middle between the carbs would help,,, SPW |
