MG TD TF 1500 - Fitting a new core plug
| Hi Guys Further to my previous post about fitting a new core plug at the back of the engine block. I was able to acheive this without removing the engine. I found that a PO had created a inch and half hole in the firewall directly in line with the core plug and fitted a rubber grommet. I drove a screwdriver in to the old plug and then inserted a self-tapper and then was able to withdraw the old core plug using a pry bar from under the bonnet. After cleaning around the hole I left it to dry for 24 hours before fitting the new core plug. I put a thin coating of Araldite around the edge of the new plug and after hitting dead centre with a 1/4 inch bar I put a further coat around the outside edge. It was a bit of a struggle working inside the car lying on my belly with my arms stretched above my head but I got there in the end. If I ever have to replace this core plug again I will consider enlarging the hole to at least 2 inches. Mick 52TD |

| Mick, what was you motivation to replace the plug? Was it not tight? Why not use a fluid sealant to fill it in the radiator and wait if the leakage will stop? Cheers, Guenter |

| Geunter I think the photograph says it all. The hole in the middle is where I fixed the self-tapper the larger hole off to one side is the cause of the leak. regards Mick
