MG TD TF 1500 - Fan & Water Pump Spindle Lubrication

I need the help of the bulletin board experts. Just ran 1000 miles on my rebuilt 1951 TD (# 12498, Engine XPAG TD2 LAX 12869). Trying to keep up with maintenance, especially lubrication. The Operation Manual (p 41) says to apply the grease gun to a "lubricating nipple for fan and water pump spindle". This is just aft of the fan belt pulley on the driver side. But there's no grease nipple there... and it doesn't look like there ever was. There is a small hole, dished with a bevel around the opening. This looks like a place to oil. Did earlier vehicles take oil here rather than grease? Does anyone have any advice out there on what I might lubricate with here? Or am I in fact missing a grease nipple ?

Can't find any info on the archive on this. All help appreciated.
Thanks - Peter

Original pumps had non-sealed bearings and required a shot or two of grease periodically. Many replacement pumps have had sealed bearings for many years. Some of these had no drilled passageway for the grease fitting, or even the raised place on the casting for it. Likely that is what you have. George

I don't have all the history of what prior owners did to my car but it is TD 1851 and there is a grease fitting where you described. Could the hole you mentioned be the remnants of a broken off zirk?
Mort TD 1851

OK, thanks. Mort's info on TD 1851 shows that early cars had the water pump grease fitting. But I don't think mine is broken off... the little hole is too neat and clean. Also too small and not threaded. I think George might have the answer: What I have must be a replacement pump... hope it has sealed bearings but I guess it can't hurt to drop a bit of oil into the hole. Time will tell, I suppose. -- Peter
