MG TD TF 1500 - Fan blade bolts
I am sure this is a dumb question but are the bolt sizes for the fan blades some odd size they no longer make? I thought I could just get them at the hardware store since Moss wants almost $8 a piece for them but have had no luck. The site says they are 5-0.75 thread bolts but even looking that size up on the internet has not resulted in any information. I have seen 4.5-0.75 and 5-0.8. Anyone have any idea? I like the look of the original bolt head but one of mine is different. I would just buy one from Moss but I am sure the head is not the same. Thanks, Rob

I wound up buying a set from Moss because they were really a strange size to find.. The Moss ones had a larger head than my old ones. As to the price....supply and demand. Oh well it's only money. :(

You could try advertising in MG Experience, on the "Trader"...Sometimes you can get "lucky".... I have purchased many parts that way. Or, find one of the British companies on line that specializes in hardware. Only other thing , bite the bullet, and buy 4 from Moss, or retap the four holes to a more common size.(not the best choice, but there are few alternatives). Edward

Be careful on torquing the original style as they snap easily. Mike

Rob, that is a specialty bolt that MG/Morris designed and made just for the TD/TF engines. NOt going to find that at the hardware store. Moss has to make them in small batches, hence the cost. You would think they could make the heads correct for $8 however. George

....although its been awhile, i got them at an industrial supply and a metric allen head bolt worked fine....can't remember the size.

The 5 X 0.75 mm is an obsolete metric fine thread bolt. You will either have to purchase them from Moss or do what a lot of others have done and tap the holes out to a 6 X 1 mm thread and go with the larger bolt. Cheers - Dave
David DuBois
Dave D. are the 6 x 1 mm bolts used on the MGB?
Jim Merz
Jim - No. The MGB uses NF and NC almost exclusively (with a very few BSF, BSP and BA) - no metric at all. Cheers - Dave

Folks, the bolts and nuts on the Morris Engines (XPAG, XPEG, etc.) are French Standard Metric with Whitworth heads. No one other than Morris (& MG)ever made such bolts and nuts. Morris took over the Hotchkiss Factory which was moved to England in WW 1. To avoid expensive retooling they decided to continue the use the machine tools in French Standard Meric threads in the manufacture of engines and transmissions. However, since British Mechanics would have only Whitworth wrenches, they decided to size the heads and nuts for Whitworth wrenches. Hence the so called :Mad Metric" nuts and bolts. eg: a 8 x 1.0 mm with a 1/4 W or 5/16 BSF head, the 5 mm bolt had a 2BA head I think. The later International standardization of the Metric thread replaced the French Standard thread with sizes that alternate between coarse (ISO) and fine metric thread. eg: 6 x 1.0 mm, 8 x 1.0 mm, 10 x 1.5 mm, etc. However the 5 x 0.75 mm French has no modern equivalent, You can still buy taps and dies in this thread however. If you want to keep the engine so your Whitworth or BSF wrenches fit and you are going to substitute for the fan bolt use a 3.16 in W or 1/4 in BSF bolt instead of a 6 m x 1.0 mm bolt. You will not find a substitute at any hardware store in the world for the fan bolts!

Edward, you know this site has a classified section, right? Much better luck advertising here for T-Series parts than anywhere else.

Thanks everyone. If I can't find one original bolt to replace the odd ball I have I suppose I will break down and buy four from Moss. Thanks again, Rob

OK Rob, you'd better give up immediately. Hen's teeth are more common. Oh and BTW when you get your shiny new bolts, can you please sell an original to me? I have three original bolts and one with an allen head.....

Rob, If you do go for the new bolts, put me on your list of customers for one of your old originals! James

Rob, Brown & Gammons here in the UK do these bolts at £2.60 each (see http://www.ukmgparts.com/product.aspx?CID=fa7d90fa-a5e3-4200-8ef2-bfe88a81db74&SID=e35dc782-ccce-4f58-8938-109d56c514dd&PID=6ab4b473-808f-4366-86a7-43f7abdaed7a) I don't know what the bolt heads are like. Matt
