MG TD TF 1500 - Exhaust TD
Hi again Does anyone know of any paint which will withstand the temparature of the exhaust manifold? It has been painted earlier before I got the car and it needs to be redone along with the engine, but I thought the temperature could be a problem. Btw, how hot does the manifold actually get? Thanks in advance Torben

I tried the ceramic paint that Eastwood has but it didn't last long. It was rated at a very hi temp. Manifold was media blasted and prepped properly but still didn't last more than a few hundred miles. I then had it ceramic coated at a local powder coating place. So far so good. But if it doesn't hold up I'll likely go for the jet hot coating which is about the ultimate coating you can give it.

I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY PAINT THAT WILL HOLD UP ,, EITHER CERAMIC, JET HOT, OR ALUMINIZING IS PROBABLY THE WAY TO GO... EVEN ALUMINIZING WILL START TO DISCOLOR AFTER 15,000 + MILES,,, SPW

Torben -- I had my manifolds done with the Jet-Hot coating and the color was the Sterling/Sliver. I don't know if you have a workshop around your area in Denmark that can do this, but the coating has been recommended by several who contribute to this BBS. Good luck -- John

The best results with paint are obtained with Stove paint rated at 1200 degrees fahrenheit. Look for one of the older brands sold at good fireplace and wood stove stores, not the generic spray paint sold in the department stores for charcoal grilles. Results are dependent upon how well the manifold is cleaned of previous paint and/or rust. This of course is also true for any of the coatings. As others said it will not be forever...

I use aluminum high temp paint. I use the "brush on" as you get a better coating that last longer. It also has a higher temp rating than other colours. It is sold under a number of different brands. Just use a brand that you have had good results with. Any coating will have to be re-done eventually.

I have been using POR hi temp, It lasts a couple of seasons and flakes off. Manifold was blasted and cleaned prior to application. I think a ceramic is probably the only one that will hold up. Unfortunately, cost of JetHot is getting up there.

I had my exhaust manifold and pipe ceramic coated about 600-700 miles ago and so far it is perfect.

I also used Jet hot. Did it about 10 years ago and it still looks great.

I saw a ceramic coated td manifold on E-bay today!
