MG TD TF 1500 - exhaust system

While looking through the archive it seems as though everyone has purchased an exhaust system from one place or another. I don't see where anyone said they just went to the muffler shop and had one made. Is there a reason for this.

I for one, wanted an exhaust system that was as nearly like the original as possible. Didn't want to have some of the bends not quite correct etc.

One thing I did do that is not original, was I bought a system that will fit on a TF as well as the TD. That gives a bigger pipe diameter so the engine breaths better.

Bob,

Where did you obtain the system.

in regard to the engine breathing better...perhaps this just pertains to high out put engines and this maybe more of a philosophical discussion than technical, but i have read exhausts are matched to engines..that a certain amount of exhaust back pressure is calculated and designed into an engine...that putting a bigger diameter pipe may decrease and engine's power output.
any thoughts?
in regard to the muffler shop..unless you REALLY know the shop, they specialize in quickie exhaust systems for current generation cars. i have a '35 terraplane the D.P.O. owner had a muffler shop put in an exhaust system..it was welded front to back and they CUT THE FRAME to make it fit! they are not touching my TD. regards, tom

I was going to fabricate a stainless exhaust for one of the TDs, but bought a Bell stainless exhaust off of ebay for $200.
I see them listed currently for $225, but from England. They'll probably pop back up again offered by a domestic seller. Moss lists them for $359.
At first, they're bright stainless but eventually oxidize dark, which doesn't bother me.

James Neel -- I just ordered it from Moss, but the maker was Falcon in the UK. Don't know if they still carry Falcon or not.
