MG TD TF 1500 - Engine scared?
I am starting to think that my engine is either scared of, or very angry at the car frame and is doing all it can to not be returned to its proper home. Perhaps the frame was abusive in the past or just did not pay enough attention to the engine. For all I know the frame may have even cheated on the engine in the past. I may have to get them counseling. One way or another they have got to get back together. Every time I think I will finally have the gearbox and engine back in the frame something stops it. I keep getting car blocked. I have my gearbox rebuilt and the engine finally complete enough to have them together and in the car, so I thought. I saw in past threads that the torque for the flywheel to crank bolts was 50ft/lbs. Mine hit 40 ft/lbs and snapped off. I am quite frustrated. Since I began the rebuild that makes about the 857th time. You think I would be used to it, but no. I really doubt any place around here will have that type of large, low profile head on a metric bolt so I suppose I will have to wait yet another week to get the bolts from Moss. Oh well, I suppose when a couple has been together for 60 years like the frame and engine have your going to have some problems. They better work it out before I go off the deep end. Rob

Rob, Ok, that report kind of frightened me a bit... lol. I mean about the anthropomorphic attributes to your engine and gearbox. But regarding the torque on the flywheel to crank bolts, I used 50 ft-lbs as well. If you are using a torque wrench at or near the end of its range, it may be inaccurate. Or, just need calibrating. But more likely, the bolts had been abused in the past. I hope your replacements are of adequate quality. warmly, dave

My torque wrench is a bar type and 50ft/lbs is mid range for it. I ordered from the LBCarCo instead of Moss. Maybe they will arrive a little earlier. $52.00 for four bolts seems like a lot but I am sure it isn't. Rob
