MG TD TF 1500 - End of The UK MoT?

Hi (UK) Guys

Just across from the MGA BBS. If you are not members of the MGCC I thought you might be interested in the following:

Interesting headline in this month's Safety Fast. The UK Government has commissioned a consultation to examine the exemption of vehicles from the annual MoT that were manufactured before 1 January 1960.

The Government is trying to remove bureaucracy from vehicles that are: "...never or hardly ever used on public highways....."!!

The consultation runs until 26 January 2012. There is a website that invites views to be registered: www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2011-27

If passed, we will not need to MoT our vehicles from 1 July 2012 onwards.

From our experience on this side of the pond, I suggest you go for a 2 -4 year MOT.I Am certain that will go over big with the members of parliment.(sp)

Steve, Did I read this correctly?:

The Government is trying to remove bureaucracy from vehicles that are: "...never or hardly ever used on public highways....."!!

Have your public servants lost their minds?? This stripping away of useless and wastefull bureaucracy would never fly on this side of the pond!!

Actually, at least some US states have exempted older vehicles. In North Carolina "Vehicles 35 years old, or older" are exempt from DOT inspection.
In addition, here in NC, you can get an "Antique Vehicle" registration plate for vehicles at least 25 yrs old, and if it is carried in the vehicle you can use almost anything in it's place. Many use a reproduction of the plate used in the year of the vehicle's manufacture, with lettering of choice. We have a British vintage repro with "54 MG TF" on it.
pic att., not great, but best I can find at the moment. Taken aboard a ferry, close quarters.

Yes. Surprisingly this one looks like being pushed through to save bureaucracy but very little cost saving. I think a couple of factors are relevant.

Firstly, our MoT is being revised shortly to make it more relevant to modern cars, and so less relevant to older vehicles.

More importantly a significant number of our Lords (equivalent to members of your Senate) and Members of Parliament (equivalent to your House of Representatives) are Historic car owners and hold pivotal positions within the FBHVC (Federation of British Historic vehicle Clubs). The UK Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) recognises the FBHVC and holds regular meetings with them. Surprisingly, decisions seem to get made and often in our favour. Just recently we were told that we no longer need to advise the DVLA of engine changes (engine number or size) to our Historic vehicles.

The article is in the December 2011 issue of Safety Fast. I have attached a photocopy of the article.

If at all possible I would get a rolling year exemption written into the law. Unfortunately California's onerous SMOG test only currently exempts 1975 model cars and earlier. Unlike other states there is no rolling exemption and many infrequently used cars from 1976 onwards are too costly to make pass the exacting California standards and thus are laid up or exported out of the state which greatly impacts the local special interest car hobby.

Truly amazes me John how in a state like California with their smog tests, that you still have hotrod shows on TV building all sorts of odd vehicles. Sure don't see a lot of smog equipment on those.

Hi Steve G,

Welcome to the T type section - I had 2 MGAs over the years - thoroughly nice cars.

I was aware of the MOT consultation paper, but not of the engine changes 'need to notify' alteration. Having several pre 1960 motorcycles, as well as the TF I would be interested to know how you found out about this info.

Cheers,

John
