MG TD TF 1500 - Ebay TD

Looking thru E Bay and found a bunch of cars for sale in various condition. ONe inparticular is for sale for 48 grand plus. Out of CA. wonder if it will ever bring that kind of money.

I frequently cruize ebay, and sometimes get a little laugh at the "buy-it-now" prices...There are a lot of folks that are in "love" with their cars, and are just "fishing"....
The good news for the rest of us, is asking-prices like this can only help the percieved value of the cars, IMHO.

It's been there for a while,,, I have attached the last picture that they posted of the car, the ID Plate.
You can see the TD2 overstruck with a 3 !!! Is that the way it was done???

I often think of the guy/boy/man/? who's job it was to punch the various numbers and how we put a lot of importance on what we see.... and, how many times he miss punched, swore, and punched over.....

It could have happened on a Friday afternoon when he got back to his punching station after lunch at the local pub???

The TD/C above the questionable 2/3 looks original and unalterd; this is as important. It may be an assembly late change, part way through assembly.

Front Iron numbers would be what I would check. If these are correct, I would agree this could have been a factory boo boo, From what I have read, all TD's came off the same line, so it could be that this one was set up for a TD II and the person stamping the plate goofed

I Have seen a TF chassis stamp with the last two numbers overstamped, in the correct font and with no attempt to obliterate the original numbers so I assume it was a factory mistake.

My TD chassis was first stamped TD15469 and restamped, albeit more forcefully, 70.

I've seen ID plates where TD2 has been overstamped with TD3, as well as engine tags where the 2 has been added to make a TD into a TD2, and where a 3 has overstamped a 2 to make a TD3. All perfectly legit and by the factory.
