MG TD TF 1500 - Early Austin Engine Question
Here's a photo of an Austin engine that was buried for many years, along with the vehicle it was in. The photo is from a lady in Zimbabwe, who is trying to trace the car and why someone buried it. Not much is left and the engine, so far, seems to be the largest piece. I initially thought it was from an Austin 7, but the head is wrong and a 7 engine, I believe had an aluminum crank case. Anyone have a clue to the model car it belongs to? PJ

Appears to be an early to late Austin 10 or 12 HP.

I think you will find its from a currently serviceable Zimbabwaean Army tank( seats 36).

Oops, must have been half asleep when I wrote that. Meant to say "mid to late" 30's.

...whats the story with being 'buried'....?

How did you know that this engine was fitted to a Zimbabwaean Army Tank? Not MG but an interesting story, Cheers, David

Ok here are some numbers found; IH497 MC2 IH496 MO18743 Block number-TH60558 Possibly another number after the 8 but too much rust to tell. More parts are being unearthed as we speak. The chassis has appeared plus other bits. More photos will follow.

Received this from the lady in Zimbabwe this morning via email. Posting as per her wishes. Dear Paul, Thank you very much for your interest. I’m unable to log back onto MG web site, this morning I received a comment about my English writing skills on my posts and one saying I never said thank you for all the help that I received on this ca. Please may you extend my apologies for the lack of my English grammar and pass my sincere gratitude onto all the gentlemen that kindly gave their thoughts and valuable comments, and also advise them I’m a woman not a man – I did mention in an early post that I do not know my way around the site and apologized ahead for any errors I may make. Thank you once again, really appreciated! Have a good day!

Tell the lady in Zimbabwe That her English is passable and we don't speak any of her native tounges. As far as I am concerned she can talk on our website any time she wants. Cheers, Bob

The Austin 7 guru on our bulletin board, is Paul Gaynor. He has several. Maybe he'll chip in. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué.

Gord- Thanks, but this is clearly not from a 7. The blokes in the UK may be of more help. As a sort of novice in the Austin 7 group, despite Gords intro, I would defer to some of the Austin boards in the UK. They are very active and informative. Not much on this side of the pond for Austins (UK variety, not the Bantams). Gord - have you gone off to the FAR East yet? Surprised to see your comment. Maybe see you at the Natter. Paul

Just got an email from Mike ?, a member of the Austin drivers club in the UK and he believes it's out of an Austin 10! No more info than that so far. PJ
