MG TD TF 1500 - Dynamo Nut
Here is a strange one, wanted to remove the nut holding the pulley on a C 40 dynamo. My calipers were not long enough to reach the nut to determine the size. In trying different sockets I found the only one that seemed to be at all a good fit was a 17mm 6point socket. When I got the pulley off I miked the nut, it was 0.681" which is 17.3mm Allowing for some room for an easy fit, my socket must be a tad over 17.3mm. How come none of my "whitworth" sockets fit? They were all too sloppy to trust putting the air wrench on (also att are 12 point). Does anybody supply 6 point "whitworth" sockets? To conclude the air wrench whipped that nut off there with no trouble. Held the pulley in my hand. On to the next problem. Cheers, Bob

Would Lucas have used Whitworth nuts on their dynamos?

Hi Bob, 0.6875" is 11/16. Perhaps that is what the nut is and just suits the application/fits inside the pulley the best.

Hi Bob, Isn't the answer that the C40 dynamo is much later than our T types, eg MGA 1600s, from the late 50s, when Unified/AF threads had become standard in the UK car industry. I don't know what the thread is, but an AF nut would seem right for the period. Cheers, John

John Mitchell You are probably right. That is a later unit. That explains it. Feel beter now. Thanks, Bob
