MG TD TF 1500 - Door Wood
Howdy all, Another new project in the garage is a TC and I need to replace the wood in one door. Of course it's another project before I get to my TD but honestly mine is in the works :-) I know is not a TD but the process is the same. Does anyone have a link to detailed picutres of the wood replacement on a door? I have the sequence down but wanted to review some shots before a start. I've got new wood on order and will be starting it this upcoming week. The TC will be a total restoration but will also be a stimulus to keep my TD in my sights. I would love a TC too. Cheers, Vince

Vince, There is a pretty good sequence on the door wood about mid-way through the door chapter on my website for the TD. www.dbraun99.com go to the TD15470 restoration and the tub and wings section. dave

Vince, The assembly of the wood in the TC door is not the same as that in a TD. If you have access to "TC's Forever" there is an illustration on how to do it on page 180). If you don't have access let me know and I'll scan it for you if I can finish getting my scanner hooked up to the computer...working on it now. Gene

Got your site open now Dave. Thanks. Actually I do have a copy of it but was at work earlier so decided to start the thread to get a heads up. Going to go up and take a look at it right now. The book not the door :-). Derned cold all of a sudden! Cheers, Vince

If the TC wood is anything like the TD wood, be sure to carefully compare the dimensions of the new pieces to the old - I am doing my TD doors as we speak and my brand new bottom rail was 1/4" longer than the old piece and would not have allowed the door to fit. In addition, all of the joints were a very poor match and needed work. Also, pay close attention to the hinge position and their mounting holes - they need to be aligned properly if you are to have a chance to get the door to fit correctly. Good luck!! Don

"Poor match and needed work". Don, the body wood was originally assembled on a jig. Every wood piece had to be hand fitted to the next. Due to this variation, the replacement wood has to be as long or wide as the largest possible original piece, so you will be doing a lot of fitting and adjusting. You can make it smaller but not larger or longer. Read Satch's TD restoration book.

The car will be completely disassembled. Should I rebuild the door before I take the car apart? I heard you should fit the rebuilt door to body while it is on the chassis.
