MG TD TF 1500 - door latch mounting plates

I have been rehanging and aligning the doors on my '52 TD----Is it proper to put the door latch plates over the door panels or to attach the plates right to the door and cut the door panel around it? I had to do some shimming on the passenger side door which would be mostly eliminated if the latch plate was mounted directly to the door (not over the door panel)---which is the forums preferred method?---thanks in advance

The door latch goes on top of the door panel. You should not need to cut the door panel. Everything needs to be tight. The hinges need to be tight, all screws need to be tight and the door needs to close on the second "click"
I don't know where you are, but I have done this on several TCs, TDs and a TF. If you are near me I could lend a hand.
