MG TD TF 1500 - Do you remember me?
| Two months ago I told about my sick TD. There were many who tried to help me, thank you for the support. The car has been to the workshop for two months now, and I got it back two days ago! There were probably several things that weren't so good, but the main fault was that one of the pistons was badly damaged. They told me I was lucky to get there when I did, otherwise the whole engine might have gone. Take a look at the piston.

...well, lets see.... overheating?.... blue smoke?....missing?....? Did you replace with oversize piston(s)....?

First, here is what I wrote two months ago. Gordon: no overheating (I think), no blue smoke. I did not replace with oversize pistons.

RAYMOND, I found your posting,,,for those who would like to view the history, May 21 2011,,, "My TD is sick these days" I'm happy that you found the problem,,, I don't think I have ever seen a ring like that!!!! Caught just in time!!!! SPW

It's amazing that it did not score the cylinder wall, which would lead to an overbore... My big question, is what happened to the broken piece? If it stayed between the rings, it would cause serious damage to the cylinder, as it flexed up and down...If it broke completely away, it would still do serious damage.....Did it break away after the piston was removed? Quite remarkable luck, I would say. Edward

Steve, I forgot to give you all the link to the original post: http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&archiveyear=8_2011.dat&access=&subject=8&subjectar=8&source=T&thread=2011052117164721148 Edward, yes, they checked the cylinder walls thoroughly and found them ok. I found the broken piece with the broken rings, but I don't know where they found it. But they also told me this was a very close thing, I guess they meant if the piece had come loose. We suddenly got other things to think about this afternoon, with the big bomb explosion in Oslo, not far from where I live. It happened where I usually walk to my photo shop. Luckily, I had no errand there today.

Raymond, Glad you've found and fixed your TD's problem but I'm very sorry that your country has suffered from what now appears to be a very deadly terrorist strike. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Gene
