MG TD TF 1500 - Dashboard Glovebox cutout
I'm doing my best to get back to working on my little basket case TD. I'm ready to cover the dashboard wood that I cutout. (Thank you Dave Braun for sending me the paper tracing years ago.) I just want to double check before I cut some of the vynl that I recieved from Moss in the interior kit. In the template that I used, there were cutouts for the glovebox door hinges on both the door and the dashboard itself. Is this correct? In looking at the chrome molding around the dashboard opening, I would think that only the door would have the cutouts. The thickness of the hinge is about the same thinkness of the chrome molding. What have some of you found in your rebuilding of the dashboard? I would like to know before I waiste any expensive vynl. As always, thank you. Patrick

Patrick, as far as I can tell, the dashboard of 'the53' still has the original rexine on it. I just took the attached image showing the glovebox door opening from behind the panel. It clearly shows that the rexine is not cut away in the hinge area. Also, the door is covered by two pieces of rexine, front and back. The separation is covered by the chrome strip. Bud

Bud, Thank you. The picture is just what I needed to see. It shows that there is a notch in the wood of the dashboard and the glove box door for the hinges. That is what Daves template indicated, I was just worried because the notch looks like it will have too much separation for the hinge. OK, I'm off to trim up the wood and possible start covering the dashboard. Thank you for the quick response. Patrick

Wow... I'm really excited for you Patrick. And yes indeed, both pieces have the cutouts for the hinges. They are thicker than they look! warmly, dave

Hello Patrick, if you are working around the dash now, you might consider making a much bigger glovebox than the original one. There is lots of space up there and I used some cardboard and wooden sticks and stitches to on an experimental way find out the maximum use of space. It turned out to be a much larges box and than I made that out of aluminium sheet and covered this with leather on the outside and felt on the inside. The box is atached to the underside of the backdash and also to the cross bar. Greetings, Huib
