MG TD TF 1500 - crank surface for moss oilsealconversion
Hi all, As I read in the instructions, the surface where the new oilseal rides should be completely smooth. Naturally. Now I probably have to have my crank reground so machining this surface will be no problem. Question however, how much can I take away for the seal to operate ? Thus avoiding a speedy sleeve. Any ideas ? Greets Gert

Gert, install a "Speedy Sleeve" on the crankshaft flange. It provides a super smooth surface for the seal. Make sure you have the later version of the seal that will withstand the RPMs of the crankshaft. The early seals that Moss used would not take the high RPMs and would fail very quickly.

Only way you can avoid the sleeve, is to take the crank to a really competent machine shop, and have them add material to the surface of the crank, and then re-machine to correct diameter....Not worth the money or the risk. Only the best machine shops can do this, and your best bet is to use the Speedi-Sleeve.... Edward

gert, use the speedi sleeve. it allows you to shift the seal running area forward..machining the crank flange will give you a smooth surface..but that surface will be too far aft for the seal to have full engagement. regards, tom

Ok, that's clear. thanks all Gert
