MG TD TF 1500 - Crank pulley timing marks
With the keyways aligned, the timing marks on the new Brown and Gammons and Moss pulleys were about 3/8ths of an inch different. I didn't compare the B & G pully to my old one. However, the marks on the unused new Moss pulley were also off about the same amount as compared to my old pulley. I determined TDC and the B and G marks were off about an eigth of an inch from true TDC. If anyone has installed a new pulley at some point, I would sure verify and mark TDC , or your timing will be way off. I wonder if this is part of the problem with so many cars overheating, power issues, etc.? George

It may be that the new pulleys have marks slightly advanced, in order the use modern fuels (where we time cars these days). Or, they could just be wrong -is the mark BTDC or ATDC? Tom

From memory, the static timing mark is 22.5 degrees from the keyway. See the photo on my website. warmly, dave From the GOF Central

Cracked pulley ( replacement from 20 years ago??) with new Moss pulley, keyways aligned. The mark on the B and G pulley on the car is about the same distance (retarded?) off of true TDC. So I'm not sure about my initial comparison comment- I was about ready to conk out from the heat. I'm sure the mark on the old pulley was correct TDC. I'll try to dig my original pulley out in the next few days and compare it as well.

George, I'd pull #1 plug and shove a stick in the plug hole to find TDC yourself. I recently had to do that ritual after rebuilding a diesel injection pump. The mark I would have thought was TDC was actually the advanced timing mark. Jim Home from GOF Central and Concours d'Elegance of America
