MG TD TF 1500 - cowel rubber strip channel?

My new rubber cowel to bonnet rubber strip has a channel on it's thicker edge. What is the purpose of this channel and where does it fit in the installation of the strip?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

There's a thread in the archives from 2011 titled "Bonnet Fit" that covers this in detail. I tried to link to it but can't for some reason.

Best,

David,
Having read this thread and the older one Roy re-posted I took my "Moss" cowl rubber off and after surgery converted it to the older style. The picture shows the before and after. Fits much better now. Thanks for posting.

George,
It was easier than I thought. I clamped the flat portion in a vise and scored a line with the blade a little longer than the length of the vise grip. Since the line is right at the top of the rounded section it was not that difficult to draw a straight line. Then I went back through the score line with more pressure a few times. You can grab the loose flap and pull on it a little as you cut and it will tear right off as you get near the bottom.
Then advance the rubber in the vise for the next cut. Takes longer to say it than to do it.

Ed,

Here's the post that Gene was referring to.

And here's a sketch showing the problem.

Cheers

Just finished cutting mine based on this info. Oddly if you looked closely at my new strip there IS a very faint white line EXACTLY where you should make this cut! Could it be that the guy cutting these just missed this mark? Nah, that would be too obvious?

Thanks all,
Ed
