MG TD TF 1500 - Correct Sierra T9 gear box ?

Hello,

I haveaquired the Hi-gear Ford Sierra T9 gearbox mounting kit, and a second hand Sierra box in seemingly good condition. The box is from a breakers yard and I do not know the eact year and type of the donor car.

I understand that there some different T9 boxes out there, and wondered if any one could help me out to check that I have the correct T9 box.

The length of the gearbox input shafrt from the end and to the tapered boss close to the bearing ( See image) is 14.5 cms long.

in the casting adjacent to the filler plug are these numbers:

839T - 700

BA -
CA -
BB -

Is this the correct box?

regards,

Jan

Jan, Here are some shots of my Seirra Type 9 gearbox, with the modified bellhousing from the kit, that might be helpful for comparison purposes. Unfortunately I did not take any measurements. You will notice that the collar around the base of the input shaft has to be cut back and shortened, so as not to interfere with movement of the clutch lever fork and release bearing.
The kit also comes with a new shortened drive shaft, front and rear motor mount brackets, engine stabilizer bracket, as engine has to be moved forward about 10 cm. and speedometer cable to fit the Ford box. A new exhaust bracket is also provided to custom fit the tranny. You will also need the correct clutch disk to match the splines on the input shaft. The web on the bottom of the rear extension also has to be ground away to clear the crossmember. There is also a new crossmember bracket support provided. The tunnel has to be cut back and the original rear tranny mounts have to be cut to size and reworked. New brackets are provided to support the front of the floor angle iron channels. Everything is a VERY tight fit with only about 3/8 in. clearance between the rear extension support and the crossmember. If I were you I would go for the actual kit with all the custom made accesssories. Hope this helps. Cheers Phil

Phil, Did you have to change the cover, or modify the original? If so, is there a 5 spd transmission the original cover will fit? PJ
Paul J

PJ,
The cover fit my conversion but I used the Skyhook Engineering setup. It uses the 5 speed tranny from a 79-81 Datsun 210. I'm very pleased with how the installation went and the performance since then.

Paul, The kit also includes the new custom fit tunnel cover with protective steel plate around u-joint. The kit also includes proper shift lever to adapt to Ford tanny and shift knob. The kit is really excellent. I would recommend removing engine to install. Cheers Phil

Thank you for some very nice and instructive pictures!
I have actually bought the complete Hi-Gear mounting kit, and my only issue now is whether my Sierra box - which is in good condition is the right one, and my only uncertainty now really is the length of the gearbox input shaft. My box is externally identical to Phils,

Jan,

The original 5-speed T-Series conversion was engineered by Hi-Gear Engineering in the UK, from whom Moss and others continue to buy the conversions to this day.

Originally, they offered only a complete kit, but when the supply of the correct Ford Type 9 gearboxes, started to tighten, they offered the kit without the gearbox.

However there was an instruction that warned of selecting the wrong version gearbox, particularly the version for the 2.8 Sierra offered in the US (Canada got the German version Sierra).

I picked up a copy of these instructions at Stoneleigh a couple of years ago, but can’t now find them. I’m sure that if you contact Hi Gear, they can advise you directly.

Jan,

I was able to locate my notes from Hi-Gear.

The gearbox to use came from the 1.6 to 2 litre Sierra, 1982 to 1991. The one NOT to use is the US Sierra 2.3 and 2.8 litre. The primary shaft (Input) is too long.

Thank you Gord. My input shaft is 6 inches long.

Hello Jan,
last winter I fit a Hi gear conversion to my TD. I found a solution to fit a modern clutch with a roller release bering into the new bell housing. Works very well and smooth. If anyone is interested, mail me off line.

Jan,

Just completed a T9 conversion about 1 month ago using Hi Gear Kit and Gearbox.
As advised by Phil I would advise removing the engine to install. I did it with the engine in the car. It can be done but getting the rear of the gearbox clear of the cross member while fitting is a challenge. You need to move the engine forward several inches, slide the gearbox in and then move the engine/gearbox back to the revised engine mount position.
Dont forget to install the exhaust pipe bracket on the gearbox before installing. It is wery difficult once in there.

Once reassembled the car runs extremely well. Quieter and less vibration.

Hello and thank you for all the feedback. I have decided to go for a rebuilt box from Hi gear. Life is too short to install dubious gearboxes in my TF!

Klaus,

Good advice. I'll bet that Hi-Gear would be interested themselves.

I have many times, tried to figure out how to install an MGB roller bearing throw-out brng and a diaphram clutch in my TF.

Both would make a significant improvement to smoothness as I'm sure you have already found out.

Nice job.
