MG TD TF 1500 - Correct solder type
Does anyone know what the right type of solder is to repair the solder on the pick-up tube of the oil pick up? The solder on the tube is sloppy and I'm afraid it will start to leak after I've put it back together.

I think I would use silver solder. Requires a torch. Oxy-acetylene is best but a propane torch will work in a pinch. Cheers, Bob

Mapp gas will also work with Silver Solder, up to 2" dia pipe. Silver Solder is more brittle then solder with a lead content, and may be more prone to creaking in an area with vibrations. I like the Oatey brand, it flows well.

GD I like the Oatey brand too. Bought some in 1997 and am still using it. Cheers, Bob

You cannot use silver solder, where soft solder has previously been used.... So, heat the area gently with a low flame....If the solder melts quickly, it is soft soldered, and that is what you will have to use.... You CAN use soft solder , where silver solder has been used, however. Edward

Been tinkering with cars all my adult life and never knew that you could soft solder over silver solder, but not the reverse. Thanks for that information Ed! PJ |
