MG TD TF 1500 - Core Plugs
At our local MG club meeting last night, I was shown a unique Core Plug that I have never seen before,, I have a set of T. Langs plugs to be installed at engine rebuild time, (Thank You) but if these fit an XPAG, it would be a good Emergency plug to have onboard.. . Probably shine up pretty good also !!!!! . http://www.dormanproducts.com/mobile/c-353-expansion-plugs-quick-seal-copper.aspx SPW

Steve - yes, these are indeed good temporary fixes, but should not be necessary if you have my brass ones correctly in place. The sizes offered by Dorman are very limited, and, unfortunately, they do not make one to fit the large plug at the back of the block. I am trying to convince them to make me a run, but so far the discussion has been around a run of at least 5,000 pieces, which will obviously be rather more than I or every MG owner on the planet, might need... I do have core plug sets available in brass, and ask anyone interested to see my page at mgtrepair.net Tom Lange Bar Harbor, Maine

I can attest to the quality of the Dorman plugs. While not something I would use on an overhaul, they are an excellent field repair and may be considered permanent. I've used both them and the rubber type. The rubber type are only suitable if there is lots of room for them to expand. If the hole is too shallow or a casting web is too close, they won't work. I removed two of the Dorman type from an engine I was overhauling and cut one open. They were hard to remove as unlike the rubber type expanding plugs, loosening the nut does not remove any tension. The one I removed relatively intact I dissected - simply cut it in half with a whiz wheel. The disc that faces the inside is pulled flat by the stud - just like tapping a regular core plug with a hammer. The soft copper shell sealed tightly to the casting. There was no sign of corrosion or leakage. I don't know exactly how long the plugs were in place but I had owned the truck for at least 10 years. The plugs had turned green on the outside but that was simply the patina copper gets when exposed to the elements.

I've used these in the past and carry one in most of my cars. I wasn't aware that they had any of the correct size for XPAG.
