MG TD TF 1500 - Compliments to Moss
Regarding my recent post about broken axle U-bolts, and disintegrated rubber buffers, I ordered new bolts, buffers, saddles , and nuts from Moss, on Monday of this week, and had the parts in time to get them installed today (Wednesday).... Not only that, but everything was a perfect fit, and I highly recommend the axle "saddles", since they will guard against chaffing from the U-bolts, and are made to help perfectly align the bolts.... I have dealt with Moss for years, and it never fails to amaze me, in this hectic world, how customer friendly they are, and how easy to find parts and help. Thanks again Mr. Moss.

I do a gread deal of business with both Moss and Abingdon Spares. Overall I find AS to have higher quality and better service. There are some things Moss does better, and some things only Moss has. I have to say, Moss does screw up a lot (sending wrong part, wrong quantity, etc.) But... They always make things right when I call their attention to it. I have not been happy with chrome, rubber and interior parts from moss. About 15 years ago The Roadster Factory really screwed up an order. When I tried to get everything sorted out I somehow got Charles Runion the owner on the phone. He told me off and suggested I not to business with them. I agreed, and haven't missed them. Moss couldn't have gotten as big as they are without great customer service.

The "saddles" are called Buffer Plates. Tom

A lot of what Moss does goes unreported. This year on the way to GOF, one of our memebers lost a water pump and Moss shipped it overnite to the GOF and they were able to replair the car and be on the road again. They do that a lot and should be supported whenever they can. I have returned stuff a year later with no problems.

ken at moss went way above and beyond to find me the two tubular rivets i needed for my side curtains...and this was for TWO rivets. i have ALWAYS been treated very well by the folks at moss. this is not to take anything away from Bobbie and the gang at abingdon spares. we are very lucky to have these sources. regards, tom

As one who has sometimes "knocked" re-pro parts at times I feel a need to man-up here. Though not always happy with the part I feel it is more a problem with some of the outsourcing and never with the folks at Moss. I have returned a number of things over "QC" issues and have always been treated fairly and with the utmost respect from anyone I have ever dealt with from Moss Motors as well as Abingdon Spares. We are indeed very lucky to have such an abundance of parts avaiable for these little cars. (Thank God they don't have a Rilley catalog! My wife would kill me with what I could do to the checkbook right now if they did. LOL)

Some of the stuff from Moss is just OK,,,, but their three pages of excuses and instructions that come with their water pump and pulley are "over the top", you must grind away part of the body, the holes might not line up,you must shim either under the pulley or on top of the pulley etc.. It's definatly not a pump that can be just packed away to use as a roadside spare with out first fitting it to the car! SPW

I've never had a problem with any of the Moss employees. I have had a problem part a couple of times, but as soon as they got the message, they shipped me another part and I had it in two days. Their good people and always try to stay on top of what they sell. With their inventory, it's pretty tough to know each and every item, unless we give them positive or negative feed back. If Moss had never built up the parts business, by influencing parts manufactures to manufacture them, we would still be searching junk yards for items to keep our cars running. I personally hope they never go out of business. That would be a sad day for the hobby. JMHO. PJ

I also like the service I get from Moss. Have you seen this catalogue from angloparts? http://www.anglodesign.be/images_ap/MG_TD-TF_catalogue.pdf

Let's really get picky, Tom. The MGA shop manual lists the "saddles" as: "Plate---top "U" clip." Moss does use the word "Buffer" but BMC didn't. ;)
David Werblow
I say saddles, and you say buffer plates, Tomato, Tomohto...dah, dah...(LOL) I wasn't touting my ability to remember the names of parts....Hell, I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast! Incidentally, which way was I going when I met you? My point (I think), was about customer service....Not necessarily who supplies the best part.... (Although , overall quality has always been good , from Moss...but , they aren't perfect...and I hope I didn't imply that). I, for one , am really glad they are there. Edward

| Anyway, here's a photo collage of parts before and after. Notice the broken-off legs, on the old U bolts, and the "buffer plate" mounted location. Steering has much improved after this, by the way. Edward

Sorry, I didn't mean to get picky. I just wanted to direct anyone else needing them to the correct Moss name. Tom

Raymond, thank you for the link to anglodesign. That will be a handy resource. good day, Bill

Ed , I take most of those broke when removing? I'l bet that did make a big differancs. Did you also replace the re-bound rubbers? Do go back and check these after you put some miles on the car...I was surprised how much mine needed tightened when I did this a few years ago!

I like Moss, but they sure get you good on shipping! I order from my local shop that doesn't charge shipping and gives me 10% off for being a club member. It's a really nice deal! I have ordered from Abingdon Spares once and I thought the quality was iffy at best. It was a chrome piece and maybe a fluke? Yet the piece is on my car as Moss didn't have it! Sometimes options are what they are, options! lol Rich

I am appreciative of Moss and the other sources which allow our vehicles to continue on, and even their shipping isn/'t much of a negative when you consdier their convenience and the over head they must endure. But I have after over fifteen years have a bitch with Moss I recenbtly requested a clutch hydraulic line for my MGB which is very well established on their data base and received one at a reasonable price in short time, but on placement it seemed to be 15'' inches too long, but functional. When a called after installation to inquire I was informed that I ordered the wrong one Duh ?? I asked for a line for a 77 MGB. When asked what was the right one, I was told it wasn't available. Duh so that's why you shipped me the functional but wrong line. This isn't a drop dead isssue but I got an attitude during this call I don't know but I will probably try AS firts befor calling the Moss " IU've Git an Attitude again" Just a curmudgeon with an attitude who doesn't appreciate being spoken doewn to when he knows he isn't wrong, Yes I know this is the TD page, but the issue is generic aND IT'S BEEN IN MY CRAW FOR A FEW EEKS NOW AND NOW I'VE LET IT OUT AND FEEEL BETTER

| Raymond, I have to agree with you that without doubt, the Anglo Catalogue is the very best - in colour no less. I used to buy from them, but they became VERY expensive; and I'm not including overseas shipping brokerage, etc - just the bare part. But their catalogue is a great reference book! | Gordon, I used to buy some parts from the Swedish branch, but that has been discontinued. And I agree, they have been very expensive. But, as you say, great catalogue (maybe that is why they are expensive?). |
Raymond Wardenaer
...certainly appreciate 'all' the companies procuring parts for our T cars, such a change in the last 20 years.... I'm sure all of them are at times frustrated with the companies who provide them with copies...at the same time I'm sure there is a lot of 'make me one of these, but watch the price'....and 'oh, that looks pretty good'.... Customer service at Moss is great, but has to be with the number of returns they must deal with, and I know there are some items that should be discontinued (but aren't for a bit longer time then they should) .... Fine line between profit and production i'm sure....you just take your chances... I'm always happy to find a new (usually in Britain) supplier for our parts....but there again, there are only so many companies making them. http://www.englishcars.com/ http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/ http://www.vintagemotorspares.com/ http://www.ukmgparts.com/ http://www.mgspecs.co.uk/ http://www.holden.co.uk/

I have a list, now 19 pages, of supplier web sites separated by category in several formats (PDF, RTF, WORD) that I will send to anyone who would like it. Just state which format you want. Reagrds, Jim
James Neel
Jim, I would love a copy please. RTF will do just fine. I don't supposed you have it an any delimited ASCII form, do you? That's OK. Worst case, I can drop it into Excel and parse. But please NO MS WORD - the worlds' absolute worst text processing program! E-mail addr. at left. Thanks. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué.

"Ed , I take most of those broke when removing? I'l bet that did make a big differancs. Did you also replace the re-bound rubbers?" Yes, they broke when trying to remove the lock nuts... All the legs were cross-threaded... The rebound rubber had been replaced by the PO. Edward
E.B. Wesson
Jim, if you'd send a set to me I'd be happy to post them on Ttalk to share with others. Any of your formats would be fine. They'd be posted as html web pages with links to downloads in your original formats. Bud http://www.ttalk.info/
