MG TD TF 1500 - Can I use MGB gears in the rear?

I have two MGB rears and would like to know if the gears will fit in a TF housing? I think their 3.9 gears, not sure. One's a 72 and the other is a 79. My TF is a 1500. PJ

I have MGB 3.9 gears in my TF1500 and it is wonderful.
Cruises happily with traffic on the interstate hwy.

Thanks Bob, that's all I wanted to know. PJ

I do not think that the late model gears will fit at all. The must come from the early models with the seperated diff housings ala MGA.

Hold up a second. I seem to recall that the gears would have to be from an early MGB, i.e., banjo type. Bud

Bud and Sandy are right. Gears fit from 1955 to 1962 MGA and 1962 to 1967 MGB, which all used the "banjo" axle. The 1968 onward axle is completely different.

The "banjo axles" had a range of ratios: 4.55.4.3, 4.1, 3.9 and 3.7 to 1.

The 4.3/1 MGA & the 3.9/1 MGB were the most common but the 1962 MGA came with the 4.1/1 (hard to find now)
