MG TD TF 1500 - Bumpers and overriders

Anybody have a comment about the "fit" of overriders to the bumpers? I have what I believe are original bumpers and original overriders but it seems the fit is pretty poor. The overriders "cutout" is not close to the contour of the bumpers. I'm pretty sure my bumpers are right since the have a slightly wider top flange vs what I hear from the repos that the profile is symmetrical.

Also, do both the front and rear bumpers have a backing /reinforcement bar? Does the front reinforcing bar have a larger hole in the center for the crank?

I guess I'm not sure what combo of parts I actually have, but they all look good!

Brian, there are rubber profiles between overrider and bumper see MOSS catalog page 50 item 31

Yes, there are back bars behind see MOSS catalog Pa54 item 42 and 43.

Yes there is a hole in the center for the crank

Brian, one or both of your bumper parts are not original. The original parts, bumper and overrider had no rubber between them from the factory. As repros were initiated the rubber inserts were used to help fill the gaps with the new bumper profiles. The original bumper bars had a more defined flat surface on the face than that of the repros.

From distant memory: Either Gerry Gougen or Al Moss shed light on this many years back. At some point either later TF production, or later BMC factory replacements, the inside curvature of the overriders changed, which resulted in gaps at the top and bottom. I have my two original TD face bars and all 4 original overriders-very snug fit all the way around on the facebar. They were chromed in the 70s, and one was smashed at some point (I backed into grandpa's Mercury) and not repaired real well. At restoration, I dug out my original TF overriders to have one of them rechromed instead (I had the original TF bumpers from a one owner car since 1956). All 4 of those overriders had the more open curves with gaps on the original TF facebars as well as my original TD facebars- totally different fit from my TD originals. Moss or Abindgon introduced the black plastic filler just for this reason some time after production stopped, as the original factory replacements were gappy. The plastic also prevents chrome on chrome rubbing, etc. Dan you are right on about the contour. I have no clue why they can't take some original ones and make some decent reproductions-the originals just look better with the much wider top lip. Some of the repro overriders are too fat and rounded also. George

Austin Healey also use these over-riders, but I think there are small differences in the Healey over-riders. Some of them are slighty wider than TF. The plastic was first used on the MGA (but have to admit, looks good on TD and TF).
Brian, do you have a copy of the Service Parts List? This will tell you all the items required. We can describe any parts you do not recognise.

Cheers,
Matthew.
