MG TD TF 1500 - Buldge on front wing question

I'm obviously still in body shop mode today prior to priming. Att photo is on exterior of inboard section of both front wings. I've outlined the buldge with pencil. Buldge continues out of sight below my finger as well. I see a square shaped type of buldge on Dave B's site in this exact same position. Does anybody know why this is here before I "repair" and regret it later? I realize the picture is too close up to help much - can post another if needed.

Thanks much,
Ed

Could that be a home-made bulge for an Armstrong shock? Maybe the original Girlings were swapped out for Armstrongs at some point it the cars life.

later TD's were fitted with Armstrong shock absorbers and the bulge is there to give clearance for the Armstrong absorbers. Early TD's were fitted with Girling shockers and did not need the bulge in the wing.

It looks like a home-made bulge for the Armstrong shocks, certainly not the neat rectangular bulge from the factory. I think Bob Jeffers is right.

Armstrong is indeed what I got! Thanks guys! I'm glad I didn't "fix" the buldge yet. Would have been a disaster!!

Interesting how this shows the history of #8686. Came with Girlings, swapped for Armstrong so doesn't have that nice square "factory" buldge. I guess I could attempt to square it up, but would probably make it even worse.

On to the next mystery!

Thanks again,

I had a different concern with my early car. Sometime in the past someone replaced the right front wing with a later one and it was a simple matter of hammer and dolly work to smooth the metal so that both were the same. It had and still has the original girlings. If you have someone close by who can give you measurements then you should be able to make it look like a stock fender easily for the Armstrong shocks.
