MG TD TF 1500 - Bottom of floor boards
The tub gets picked up to be painted on Monday, so I am working on finishing the last parts to be installed when the tub returns. Is there any particular product that is recommended for the coating of the bottom of the floorboards? The bottoms of the original floorboards (too damaged to reuse) look to be coated with a black hardened tar like substance. TIA for your input -- John

I use Minwax black wood stain followed by several coats of satin urathane. It looks great and holds up well too. The wood stain needs to be mixed. Any hardware or paint store should be able to handle it. -David

Thanks David, your suggestion looks to be a good solution -- John

The stain may be called "ebony". I can check. It looks good, nice black satin look, while providing exceptional protection. I also used it on the battery tray wood. -David

David -- It is called "ebony" and I have already purchased. Now out to the garage to start the process. Again thanks for the suggestion -- John

Instead of coating mine, I've put down some thin alum sheets obtained from the local big box home warehouse. Thought would be better road dirt/wet protection. Don;t well for 20+ years. Seems to remember one 3x5 sheet almost perfectly covers one side. Randy

Randy -- How did you attach the aluminum sheets to the wood? And how "thin" is thin? That still may be a possibility for me. I do plan to put a piece of aluminum, with air space, between the passenger side floorboard and the muffler. Regards, John

John Looks to be about the standard stock heating duct thickness, guessing ~1/32". Got it from that department. Flimsy in big sheets. I have one side that is a a bit thicker that came from some sheet metal I got from the space shuttle scrap yard 30 yrs ago. Attachment was minimal. Basically just set down under the wood floorboards with thru-bolts for the seats. I made small rectangular cutoffs in the edges for the driveshaft cover bolts just 'cause I didn't want to hassle with making semi-precise located holes for them. Haven't had any problems with the sheet shifting, drooping. One could do a couple sheet metal screws spotted around if you felt it needed it. Randy

I'd recomend some good sealers and then finish the job with some black undercoating. Seems to do very well at maintaining the wood. I reused thhe floor boards on the TF as they still looked like new..complete with the brushed on undercoating. New boards in the TD replacing the non-undercoated trash that was there. After black paint I gave them some spray on undercoating. I'll let the next owners see how long it holds up. I know we talked about the aluminum.
