MG TD TF 1500 - Bonnet Bulge

Hi Everyone,

I need to put in an additional bonnet bulge on the right hand side of my 51 TD to provide clearance for the original intake manifold when fitted onto a Leystall Lucas HC Head.

Can someone out there with a bulge on both sides of the bonnet please measure where the 'bulge' is positioned ie. from the hinge line down, and from the front rearwards. Also whether the 'bulge' is of the same dimensions as the one to clear the dynamo?

Many thanks in advance,

David.

Hi David; Sorry you kinda got overlooked on this one. My car is on the rack with another disabled under it so tough to get to it to measure. Will do as soon as possible. Right side bulge is approx half the size of the dynamo bulge. Dynamo side bulge is made by adding a formed piece to the bonnet side-right bulge is stretched into shape by working existing material. With the end of the tape on the front edge of the bonnet...it is 14" to the rear of the bulge...
Approx 5 1/2" from the hinge down to the bottom of the bulge (in middle)
The bulge is small ... about 3" high by about 4" wide.....
I would think it is about 3" 'out' from the panel.....

Hi Gordon and Dan,

Thanks very much for your replies.

Dan, I did not realise that the manifold bulge was formed out of the bonnet side as I have never seen one in the flesh.

Gordon, Thanks for the dimensions. Could you please re-check the amount it sticks out from the bonnet side as 3" is more than I would have expected although as I have said to Dan I have never seen one. What I intend to do is to plot its position on the bonnet side and cut out the oval shape and make a 'bulge' to be inserted from the inside as is the dynamo bulge, which will be a good opportunity to practice panel beating skills!!

Thanks again, David.

Hi David,
I think you should get the information you require from a member who has a TDC. The side bulge you need should be very close to what is on this model.

David; I think I would test fit the bonnet side and mark the intake position from the inside before I began any work. While Gordon and I both have correct TDC panels, the fit with the Laystall head has not, to my knowledge, ever been verifided to match the positioning of the bulge required by the Mark 2 equipment. Just a thought. Dan
