MG TD TF 1500 - ANY REGRETS.......!

GREETINGS.

Does anyone have any regrets for changing
Transmssion oil & rear gear oil to
Red Line MT--90, or 75W90 All synthetic....?

A concern was: while it leaks now, it will leak
more, and from different places after the c/o...!

Your thoughts, experience, please.

Pax.

First, where does your trannie and rear leak??????

I'm not sure they do leak.
I do have a " cotter key " leak fron the
bottom of the motor which may drift
onto the trans drain bolt...

I am not trying to stop a leak.

I am trying to improve the shifting
and prevent any bearing issues in the rear
areas. Since I need to add some rear oil,
I was thinking of the c/o...

Hey Conrad,

I swear by the stuff. Made a noticable difference in shifting.

I haven't yet put it in the diff, but plan to ~ manaña.

Dr R,

I put RedLine in my original transmission and it made a difference shifting. I am also running it in the rear and do not see any leaking.

I put RedLine in my transmission and do have a slight leak. My only regret is not to have rebuilt the transmission when the car was torn down. Dumb mistake on my part.

DrRx,

Don't put the MT-90 in your rear axle, it isn't made for that. OK on the 70w90 NS though for the rear axle.

I happen to use the 70w90 NS in both my gearbox and rear axle. No problems, as far as I can see. I do have a minor leak on my Right Side rear axle bearing cover, but it isn't bad enough to take it apart and check the lip seal or the surface face.

I plan to use MT--90 in the Manual Transmission.
And 75-W-90 in the rear. Both Red Line.
What is the difference between 75-W-90
and 75-W-90NS-(Non-Slip)....?
Which to use...

I notice item 113--Gearbox TD-TF display. Moss Catalog. # 324-810 Washer.
For transmission oil filler & drain plug.
Same washer fits both....
What is the size....? Maybe available at
local auto store...?

I'd want them handy before the c/o.

I do thank you for your keen insights and
experience.

DrRx et al,
That washer isn't available locally here, tried several auto parts stores and shops, even a foreign car shop.
I use Redline MT-90 in the TF gearbox, there's enough other leaks that I don't know if it made any dif. there, but it does shift smoother.

I had used regular 90w gear oil, tried a synthetic, thought I had a sprinkler system, changed to Lucas oil in transmisson & gear box....result easy shifting and couple of drips of oil occasionly. Transmission is original, never rebuilt, so must have the original gaskets.... 1953 TD

The washer is a special copper washer. If you do not use it you will probably get a leak at the plug.

Red line MT 90 made a huge difference to my cars gear change - higly recommend it - as others have stated choose something else for the diff...
