MG TD TF 1500 - Amp Gauge

Someone on this forum said that no question was stupid.
My 52 MGTD Vin# is 19143. I have an amp gauge that is 20/20 and appears to have a black plastic body behind the dash. It is the only gauge that does not light up with the dash lights. It seems to work properly.
Do I have the wrong gauge? why does it not receive light from the bulb next to it? Should I have the 30/30 gauge and do these amp gauges have their own light? I don't have any other MGTDs to look at on this island. Should I try to find one (30/30 or 20/20) on eBay? My car is a driver and I just want it to light up and work. It should look normal, which the present one does.
By the way the car is coming along nicely and running great. I have sent off the speedometer and tachometer to be restored.

Bill, Mine is a Lucas gauge (stamped on the back metal cover), allows the dash light to filter in, and is 30 amps. Picture of the front.

Bill - I suspect that you have an after market gauge. the original Lucas gauges have a metal body with cutout slots covered with a translucent plastic that allow the lights to the side of the gauge to shine through onto the face of gauge. I don't know at what car # the change was made from the 20/20 to 30/30 ammeters occurred, but both gauges were constructed the same (and not with black plastic bodies. Cheers - Dave

Thanks guys. I got the answers I needed.

You can see in the original it is held into the dash wih the metal tabs bent out. After a couple removals, they break. Should be a 30/30 after car #10751 or so when they switched to the dished instruments. George
