MG TD TF 1500 - AEG 122 3/4 Cam

Gentlemen:
I recently acquired a reground AEG 122 3/4 camshaft as well as a Laystall Head and 4into1 exhaust:)
I recognize the benefits of the Laystall and the Tuned exhaust but I am uncertain about the 3/4 cam. I don't plan on racing my TF and don't really want the slow idle to be a "shake rattle and roll" situation! The question is simply for best all round performance am I better off with the standard grind cam or the 3/4?
Many thanks for your help:)

Rod - if you like a lumpy idle at about 1500 rpm, very little torque at the low end, but more high end above 5,000 RPM, then the AEG122 cam is for you - it's basically a racing cam. If you plan to drive the car on the street, go with the stock cam or one of the mildly hotted cams such as a street cam from Crane or Delta. Also remember that everything works in concert - if you change one element, it will affect the others. If you change the cam or use the headers, you will very probably need to change the needles, which is a trial-and-error process.

The Laystall-Lucas head, also, will not permit you to use carbs without cutting into the TF side panels, as the head projects further to the right than the stock head.

These things look great on the shelf and on the car, but can't just be bolted-on to give more HP. You are much better off adding a blower, a 5-speed, and a 4.3 diff.

I have the AEG 122 cam, along with a flowed and shaved head (50 thousand), so my compression is up a bit from stock. It requires a higher than normal idle (about 1100 rpm), but overall have not had any problem with street use. The car does not like doing a parade, or longer periods of stop and go traffic, but other than that I am pleased with its performance.

I ran an AEG 122 for years. When it wore out, I replaced it with an off-the-shelf grind from a local supplier which is still installed and gives an even better torque curve.

By today's standards, the AEG 122 is quite old technology and IMHO, not worth installing.
