MG TD TF 1500 - accident averted

After reassembling the TD last summer and having the engine rebuilt, I just don't seem to have the power that I "think" that I used to have. So last weekend, after some thought, I decided to back off the brakes a little thinking maybe they were too tight and thus holding the Td back. Did I mention that I live on a steep hill? At the bottom of the hill my eyes grew very large when I stepped on the brakes with little response. Eventually I stopped, cleaned the pants, said a prayer and wondered how I could be so stupid. Maybe next time I will just feel the drums to see if they are hot. BTW car runs fine other that that.

Are you saying loosening the adjusters can cause this? Scary!!

I was always amazed how a little adjustment seemed to make an inordinate difference in pedal height.

Yes I only backed them off a click possibly two

Like the manual says,,, tighten the adjuster untill the wheel locks, and then back off ONE click.

Tim...Maybe this will make you feel better!
Been "meaning" to remove all my brake components and send them out for re-sleaving. Business has been bad and money tight right now so....
Had rebuild kits (and leaking cylinders on front wheels) so decided I would just hone them out for now, and get her back on the road.

Got all that done & installed my “speed bleeders” (nice!). Go to check the adjustment on back wheels and they are frozen …can’t budge them. Put on a wheel…still can’t budge either of them. Climb up on the rack…start the car put it in gear and still will not budge. (stalled out)

Decide to sit down and have a cold one before I start disconnecting lines and opening bleeders to free them up enough to adjust.
Suddenly it hits me (like the wet slap at the end of a cold fist) ….duhh.. Release the parking brake!
Beer is good brain food!
