MG TD TF 1500 - #8686 Happy Birthday
It seems traditional to wish one's car Happy B day so today it is, June 29, 1951, according to the T-register. My car's government registration has always listed it as a 1950 TD however, not a '51. I'm wondering from the experts if it was common sell 1951 cars as "1950"'s or something back then? Or has my car's paperwork always been wrong? Ed

Normally cars of this era run the other way ...my TF was built in Oct of 54 but tittled as a 55 because that was when it was "sold". This was a pretty standard practice back then in most states. I have seen a TF tittled as late as 1957 because that was when ir was first tittled. I can't recall ever seeing one go "the other way". Have you confirmed the info with T-register? They do make mistakes...I have 2 BMHT certifacates for mine, (one shows an incorrect engine number). As for wrong info on tittle ...yep that happens also! My tittle showed an "impossible" vin # because a "/" had been recorded for years as a "1". That was fun to get fixed! At any rate: Happy Birthday 8686! Cheers, David

My TD 8105 was built June 5, 1951 so yours should be about right. As far as registration, states aint to smart. Mine was and is registered as a PDSTR. I have tried to get the state to correct it to RDSTR but to no avail.

ED, My TD 'came out" on Nov 7th 1950. I did not purchase it until June 1951. It is titled as a 1951. In the end, it matters very little, after you have had 60 years of fun with it. George

I was under the impression that it also had to do with when it got to the US? My 50 was built in November, but it appears did not get to the US until 1951 so that is what is on the registration.

Unless I am wrong here ...I think you are missing Ed's point. Cars built 1950 regestered/titled as 1951 Cars built in 1954 regestered/tittled as 1955 Not unusual at all. Car built in 1951 regestered/titled as 1950...very unusual!

We bought our TF in 1988. It was always registered as a '55, and I thought it was. I recently discovered it was made on November 30, 1954 (TF 8281). It probably didn't hit the dealership until 1955, especially since it was sold in California.

If you think about it, American cars have been that way as long as I can remember. An early 1955 Chevy was built in 1954. Same goes for all models, it's just they didn't put a plate on the car giving the actual build date. My 1993 Chevy truck was actually built in 1992. To me if you have a 1955 model, build date shouldn't come into play. My 55 TF was built December 17, 1954, but it's a 55 regardless. PJ

Your correct Dave. That had to be an error on the DMV. We have to remember that in 1951 Everything was typed by a manual typewriter or written in.
