MG TD TF 1500 - 4.3 conversion again!

Hi guys: I am getting ready to do de MGA-TD 4.3 conversion as per Dick Lunney article in North American Classic MG Magazine, Issue 3, 2001. I have almost everything figured out and I believe I can tackle it. But I still have one question. Lunney says that the TD carrier bearings must be replaced. He mentions that the Moss number for these bearing is 127-300 but that you also can use Timken bearings, but he does not furnish the Timken part number. Does anyone know the equivalent part number in Timken for Moss 127-300? Thank you very much.

Stuart -- I'm using Koyo # 6207C3 for the carrier bearings for my 4.3 conversion. For the pinion bearings I'm using the Timken cone 3188 and cup 3120 (inner), and Timken cone 15100 and cup 15250 (outer), as recommended by the Southeast club in their write-up "Virgin Rear-end Conversion"

Hope this helps -- John

Hello Stuart. I would think it a false economy not to replace all the bearings since you have the diff out and apart. The bearings for the carrier are 7207 (40 degree angular contact bearings and this is why they need to be preloaded). They need to be installed in the correct direction. These are available in many grades, you only need a grade B.(This type of bearing is used in machine spindles) The pinion bearings are the Timkin type. The numbers given by are the correct numbers. I currently have 5 diff's that I'm doing for various people and have two more comming in a month or two. I have done over 90 diff conversions. If you have any questions or run into any problems contact me. I'd be happy to help you. Another note on the Timkin bearings several will have the same bore the difference is the radius the they have for clearance against the part they are pressed on or into.

stuart, when I did my td, I didn;t change the diff carrier bearings. I remember shimming them to get the proper amount of lash. The only bearings that I replaced were the pinion bearing.

Hi Guys:
Thank you very m uch for your comments and advice, they surely have been a great help.

Butch you have been very kind to offer your help if I run into any problems, I sure will. The best thing would have been to send the rear end to you, as there is nobody down here that can do the conversion, but shipping to and from the mainland will kill me. I have not done any conversion before but I did a complete chassis up rstoration of our TD, including restoration of engine and transmission, all by myself, so I believe I probably can do this conversion.

Thanks again.

Stuart
