MG TD TF 1500 - 4/44 Rear Axle - keep or dispose of

Some years ago I purchased a 4/44 for the rear axle, engine and gearbox. In hind sight I should have kept the whole car as it was close to being a goer.

As you would have noticed from my posts, I am using the engine in my TD whilst I have the XPAG rebuilt.

The gearbox (column shift), I will throw out, but as the rear axle is close to the same width as the TDs, is it worth keeping as a spare?

TIA
Stuart

Hi Stuart:

I hope that when you say "dispose of" and "throw out" you really mean Pass On to other car people.

Think twice about the gear box . . . it bolted to the engine that fits the T-series and may contain useable parts for an MG tranny - worth checking anyway.

The axel is not worth keeping as there are lots of T-type spares around for $200 or so since many were replaced with MGA.

On the other hand I have thrown nothing away for 40 years and have been a local source for rare parts for a long time. My inventory is now down to almost nothing as I give away or charge very little if a fellow club member needs it. I do have a Wolseley block someplace around though . .

:=)

Just my opinion . .

Hi Stuart, unfortunately with the exception of the output flange not one of the parts in a 4/44 gearbox are the same as those in a TD gearbox.
As for the rear axle - it is about 2" wider than the TD so the half shafts cannot be used in the TD, however the gears and diff carrier are identical to the TD (5.125 to 1) and are probably worth keeping.
I am looking for a set of 4/44 rear bake drums so if you want some $$$$ for the ones you have could you send me an email?

Do NOT, ever, ever throw out original parts they as they are getting scarce every day.
I became an owner of a thrown out gearbox and water pump, all usable parts but the blown cluster gear.

I still have my car's original spark plugs.
