MG MGF Technical - Wishbones - front
The upper side of both Left and Right wishbones (MGF 1996 VVC) are showing signs of rust. Seems the MOT test in Feb missed these! I will be replacing them soonest, which is a fair DIY job. Advice appreciated:- A) Whilst I've got the subframe dropped and joints split, I will change upper and lower knuckles. Can I use a splitter fork and hammer or must I get a spliiter with a screw attachment? B) Should I be using poly bushes at any place I take apart? Jeff

Splitter with the screw attachment works better Jeff. With respect to poly bushes - there's an argument for replacing worn bushes, but be aware that not all PU bushes are the same - indeed I gather than some are actually 'softer' than the standard metalastic bushes used as OEM...

Thank you Rob for your advice. I've got a hammer in fork type - but sounds like I need to invest in the screw up tight first variety. http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=298845 has pics of a tech/servicing day. The wishbone with the hole in it is mine! Jeff

Broke my hammer/fork splitter!!! That'll teach me to buy cheap Chinese tools off fleabay >:o( Holes in the wishbone is unfortunately a common fault as our cars get older. Always worth inspecting come service time. Surprisingly my car is still on its 1995 originals... Got a pair in the stockpile just in case though :o)
