MG MGF Technical - Water temperature gauge

Hi

Driving to work this morning I noticed that the temperature gauge was not reading correct. Instead of it being just below half way it was only two notches up.
Driving home tonight it is still doing the same thing but this time in the space of 5 mins the gauge went from one dot up to four dots up back down to one dot up then to three dots up then back to two dots up and then stayed there.

Not sure what is going on could this be the sender unit or the thermostat.

Your input would be most appreciated

It sounds to me like your black temperature sensor may be going high resistance or breaking down. My gauge recently dropped to zero after occasional 'mucking about' during the previous week or two. It hasn't budged in the past 100 miles now so I am replacing the black temperature sensor over the weekend, as I already have a spare one. It might just be a case for electrical contact cleaner, but I'll change it anyway.

It is good to have a low level alarm fitted in such circumstances - some people apparently spend time watching the temperature gauge while driving!

Martyn,

>could this be the sender unit or the thermostat.

Yes, also the harness could be the reason.

I'd start at the engine side to look for the failure.
At the sensor connector.
Find some details here in the section *water temperature gauge sensor*

*update edit:
Sorry, Charless was faster :)
