MG MGF Technical - Upper Ball joint, Track rod end.
My wife's 96 MGF has just failed it's MoT on upper ball joint and Track rod end. They seem easy to change according to the manual. Is there any MGF anomalies that I should be aware of. I do have DIY, mechanical experience, but the MG does sometimes have strange problems associated with changing parts, yours Brian

I think the front suspension is straight out of a metro and is therefore straightforard. The top joint needs a big pair of stylsons to unscrew it from the hub carrier. It also needs a ball joint cracker to release it from the top suspension arm. (unless you are good with the 2 hammer technique. Same for the track rod end.

Bob, thank you for the info, I just wanted to make sure having worked on the MG for a while now, some time it has some strange ways of doing things. I have bought a socket to fit the top joint, not that I will use it for anything else, because of the size and have a joint spliiter. thanks again Brian

Well completed the track rod end easily, but nothing would move the ball joint and I ended up taking off the hub and putting it in a vice and getting a braking bar with an entention tube on it. The ball joint had been put on with a good amount of locktight which obviously caused the problem. I cleaned out the threads before replacing the joint and all went well. I did not replace the locktight as the locking tags must be enough to secure the joint. Is there a need for locktight? it said nothing abount it in the manual. Brian
