MG MGF Technical - Uneven front tyre wear
Hi all, I just noticed that I have uneven type wear occurring on inner aspects of the front tyres. Coincidentally (or maybe not?) I had the hydragas refilled some months ago. Could this be related (ie: not done properly)? I know this is a common problem and have had a read of an article on Rob Bells site about it...but am abit unsure about the ins and outs of it, not being a mechanic. Thanks Daniel

You should have the tracking checked after having the suspension pumper up.

Have a proper 4 wheel alignement check. Often a tracking only check is insufficient with our cars.
Dave
Changing the suspension height (eg by re-pressurising the Hydragas) affects the wheel alignment. These cars are particularly sensitive to correct alignment. As Dave says, you should have all 4 wheels checked as the rear tracking is also adjustable.

I'm with Dave and Mike on this, four wheel alignment is a must. We had ours done (at a cost of about £40 st.) when we first got the car about 18 months (20,000 miles) back. The handling was appauling but with advice from guys on this forum we selected different tyres and along with the pump up and adjustment all was well. (Thanks again, guys). Just recently the nearside suspension was noticibly lower than the off side so we had it pumped up again (both sides) and when the alignment was checked it was spot on, and why should it not be? The mechanical adjustments to the alignment are, once set, correct for a car riding at the correct height, therefore when the suspension lowers the alignment is incorrect, when the car is re-set to correct height the alignment in once again correct. Am I right or am I right? That said, it's always worth having the alignment checked after a pump up but it should not need adjusting. Our local bloke doesn't charge for checking alignment, only adjusting, and he's quite happy to have you looking over his shoulder and for the uninitiated he will explain what's going on. Rare, I know. Adam
