MG MGF Technical - Timing
I have overhauled the motor of my MGF 1.8 VVT following a HGF. In getting the head planed, valves reseated & valvestem seals replaced, all the marks I put on the head (cam sprockets etc) to indicate location of the for reassembly and timing have been cleaned off (even though it was meant to be an endelible marker!!!). How do I go about realigning everything so as to avoid bending some valves on the piston heads??? Thanks for the help. Adrian

Not sure how simple this is AN - I've got an MPi and haven't yet dabbled in the inner workings of the VVC head. However, some contributors here have done - most memorably Valter, who stripped his VVC apart and then rebuilt it. Hopefully either he or Mike Satur may be able to provide some insights for you? Either way, I would recommend you get hold of the engine workshop manual if you haven't already got a copy?

Are you stuck on the alignment of the sprockets at the VVC end of the head, or the basic engine alignment of the cams & pistons? I'm not familiar with the VVC end, but if you search YouTube for video titled K Series Cambelt, there's one that shows the correct marks to line up for crank/camshaft synchronisation.

Hi Thanks for the help so far. The problem is sorting out the cambelt end - the cams and pistons. I do not want to bend the valves. I have located the video - thanks. I will keep you posted of my progress. Adrian

| As with the MPI, there are factory marks on the two pulleys which need to be aligned when the engine is at 90BTDC on number one piston. Provided the VVC mechs are fitted correctly and synchronized and the rear belt and oulleys are correctly fitted then it is very straightforward, the two marks on the pullies should face one another pointing inwards and should be exactly level halfway down so that an imaginary line drawn through them will pass through the centre of both pulley bolts.
