MG MGF Technical - Thermostat orientation?

Hi

I recently posted ref after having changed my HG i had problems with the expansion tank being full to the brim!!

Anyway i have finally got the time to investigate it and I think I may have put the new thermostat in the wrong way round, Is this possible?? could someone explain which way is the correct way please?

I think I'm having a blonde moment!!

The spring side directs to the waterpump. (cam wheel cover)
