MG MGF Technical - TF rear wheels and tyres
Hi guys, It's been a while since I've posted on this board (joys of fatherhood) but I would appreciate your help on what I hope is a simple problem. I've finally got rid of my old P reg F VVC after 150k (infested with rustworm, I'm afraid) and have picked up an 04 TF160 - which is nice. However, it has 195 tyres all round. The rears should have 215, surely. I've taken it to my friendly local tyre man and he says that he _can_ put 215s on the rear but would want to be sure that the rear wheels shouldn't be wider than the fronts. We've taken the wheels off fore and aft and they look identical (marked 7-16, he says). He is worried that the previous owner has put a couple of front wheels on the back. Having read the archive, I think maybe the p.o. put 195s on the back because of the snow - or maybe he couldn't find some 215s. So: can I put 215s on a 7-16 wheel? Also, my old F had "VVC" on the inlet manifold but this TF does not. Did the TFs come with a plainer inlet manifold or is this a sign that it has been changed? (The car does have plenty of VVC equipment and I did check that it is genuine - and it drives quickly enough that I don't think somebody has just stuck a 160 badge on the back). Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Steve, Quick answers - yes you should have 215 tyres on the back with 195 on the front, yes the wheels are the same size front and rear and yes the TF has a plain plenum cover where the early F's had a rather nice black casting with "VVC" embossed! Cheers, Tim

Thanks, Tim, for your quick response. This place is just one of the reasons I'm still happy to be an MG owner. Cheers.
